Proper fitness and conditioning is an important component of optimal health. We are all familiar with the benefits of exercise as a good way to burn up unwanted fat stores. In fact, many health conditions can be positively impacted through the addition of aerobic (in the presence of oxygen) exercise. A good example would be type-2 Diabetes wherein the sugar for the individual cells is not responding appropriately to insulin (which would under normal conditions act to push the sugar into the cell) whereby it may be burned as a metabolic fuel. For most individuals the addition of exercise can increase the necessary flow and exchange of oxygen in the blood so that the cells may more effectively burn the sugar for energy (in the presence of oxygen). Thus the excess sugar that was initially present may be used up in the process. It is important that the body burn this increased sugar otherwise the sugar that accumulates may negatively impact the cells by the undesirable consequence of binding proteins and sugars together on the cell wall-a process known as glycation. Glycation can lead to the premature aging of the cell by interfering with the normal fluid transfer of beneficial compounds into the cell and the removal of metabloic toxins from out of the cell. Glycation is the same process that occurs in the bread oven because the heightened baking temperature can cause the sugars to bind to the proteins (example gluten) in the dough and the result is the production of a hardened bread crust. This process of crusting may be a possible explanation for the tissue crusting of muscles that occurs in the the disease process known as Fibromyalgia.

Before starting an exercise program one should consult with one's healthcare professional to insure that it is safe and that the individual is healthy enough for exercise. One test that may be recommended by the doctor is a simple test to accurately screen for the presence of ketones in the urine. If there are too many ketones present then these molecules may interfere with normal activity of insulin upon sugar. Ketones are produced when the body is breaking down fats for an enrgy source. If the body cannot effectively utilize sugar due to increased insulin resistance (an apparent lack of the cell's normal response to insulin) then the body may resort to the breakdown of fats as the alternate go-to energy source (fats can breakdown into ketones). If one has excess ketones in the bloodstream and this is combined with the acidic and metabloc cellular byproducts from exercise then one may run the risk of developing a potentially serious condition known as ketoacidosis. This is just one example why one should consult with one's doctor prior to beginning an exercise program.
